On Leavitt Road as it is in Heaven.
WHY WE GATHER
Scripture makes a claim that we all understand on some level; life is better together. It’s tragic that so many people are trying to navigate their way through life and spirituality alone. We gather because we believe that when we do so, the Spirit of Christ is present, in the “Body” (a New Testament metaphor for the church). Our Sunday mornings are a collective expression of our faith, as we worship as one body, explore ecumenical liturgical movements and contemplative rhythms. We gather to share our faith, doubts, questions, joys and sorrows together, and to lift them to God. It all belongs and it is all sacred.
WHO WE ARE
Great Lakes Church is a melting pot of a collective community, consisting of seekers, wanderers and religious outcasts who are rooted in the way of life that Jesus lived and called us into. It is our belief that the way Jesus lived is what it means to be fully human, fully alive. And we believe that Jesus endlessly invites us to step into the current of God’s redemptive purpose in all facets of life. We feel the call to kinship and solidarity with those with whom Jesus dined with and stood with, and to take this liberation called “gospel” to the streets.
How It Started
Great Lakes Church began gathering as a small group of twelve people in March 2008 and simply started a word-of-mouth invitation to all people in Lorain, Amherst and surrounding communities looking for a Jesus-centered church where God is honored and we invite the life, death and resurrection of Jesus to transform our lives.
GLC originally began meeting in gyms at the local schools, starting off as a portable church. We made a home in Shupe School for a handful of years. When the school levy passed and the Shupe building was no more, GLC purchased the empty Lorain Party Center in 2017 and began a large-scale renovation adventure that took over 2 years to complete. Great Lakes Church opened our doors at 2501 N. Leavitt Rd in Lorain on Christmas Eve of 2018.
The Great Lakes Church story is a story of God's constant provision, resiliency, pure grit and determination. Our story is a living witness to God's power to bring beauty + life from ashes, and Spirit moving and counseling all along the journey.

What to Expect
SUNDAY EXPERIENCE
Great Lakes Church is a comfortable place to connect with God and people. Our service begins at 10AM Sunday mornings and typically lasts about 75 minutes. We offer a laid back, family-friendly atmosphere and hot coffee + tea (we pride ourselves on GOOD coffee!). Our music is contemporary with a few folksy renditions on old hymns here and there, and our worship atmosphere is relaxed.
CHILDREN
Our Great Lakes Kids Ministry is one of the biggest and brightest ministries of the church. GLC Kids equips + partners with families to disciple the next generation! Our 5th grader and under have class learning about the love of Christ. It is a fun, safe and secure environment, so you can sit and relax during the service.
